in the country after 2008, from buying cigarettes for life, now that no youth will be able to buy cigarettes or tobacco products for the rest of their lives.
- The New Zealand government plans to implement this very strict law by the end of 2022. The ban, the strictest of all laws in force in the world to curb tobacco deaths, is part of a broader plan focused on the country’s disproportionately affected Māori tribal population.
- New Zealand is already one of 17 countries to make packaging of cigarettes without spices mandatory.
- New Zealand already has a ban on the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18, but the government aims to achieve its goal of reducing the national adult smoking rate to below 5% by 2025. These measures are not enough.
