Recently DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) has handed over a technology for indigenous ‘Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System’ (ECWCS) to five Indian companies.
Earlier recently, DRDO successfully conducted the first flight test of indigenously developed surface-to-surface missile ‘Pralay’.

It is ergonomically designed modular technical fabric with superior thermal insulation and physical comfort based on the insulation required in different ambient climatic conditions in Himalayan regions during different levels of physical activity.
The Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS) system is equipped with a host of features that allow for rapid sweat absorption, breathability, and rapid physical movement. It also includes breathability and waterproof and heat protection features for operation in high altitude areas.
It is suitably designed to provide thermal insulation over a temperature range of +15 to -50°C with various combinations of layers and intensity of physical work.

Indian Army requires it for its continuous operations in glaciers and Himalayan peaks. Till recently, the army has been importing items such as extreme cold weather clothing and many specialized clothing and mountaineering equipment (SCME) which are essential for soldiers deployed in high altitude areas.
It acts as a necessary barrier to the prevailing climatic conditions to provide a viable import option for the Indian Army.

DRDO was established in 1958 by combining the Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army with the Defence Science Organization (DSO) and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production (DTDP). The Hindu Analysis.
