Kavach – Today Current Affairs

  • Recently Indian Railways tested ‘Kavach’-automatic train protection system by moving two trains towards each other at full speed.
  • The Kavach system was announced in the Union Budget for the year 2022 as a part of the Self-Reliant India Initiative. In the year 2022-23, it is planned to bring about 2,000 km of rail network under indigenous system for safety and capacity addition.

Today Current Affairs

Kavach:

  • It is India’s own automatic protection system, which is in development since 2012 under the name Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), which is named as Armor or “Kavach”.
  • It is a set of electronic components and radio frequency identification devices installed in locomotives and signaling systems as well as in tracks.
  • They connect to each other using ultra high radio frequency to control the brakes of the trains and also to alert the drivers, all on a programmed basis.
  • TCAS or Kavach already includes tested key components such as European Train Protection and Warning System, Indigenous Anti-Collision Device.
  • It will also have features like hi-tech European Train Control System Level-2 in the future.
  • The current form of Kavach adheres to the highest level of safety and reliability standards called Safety Integrity Level-SIL 4.
  • SIL is used by plant owners/operators to measure safety performance requirements for hazardous works with two voluntary standards.
  • There are four SIL levels (1-4). A higher SIL level means that the procedural hazard is higher and a higher level of security is required.
  • In its new form, India wants to establish ‘Kavach’ as an exportable system, which is a cheaper alternative to the European systems prevalent across the world.
  • While Kavach now uses ultra-high frequencies, work is underway to make it compatible with 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology and products for global markets.
  • Work is in progress to make the system compatible with other systems already installed globally.

Importance: The Hindu Analysis

 Security:

  • Kavach system will help in preventing accidents like collision of trains on rail tracks.
  • Once the system is activated, all trains within a range of 5 km will stop on adjacent tracks to provide safety to the trains.
  • Presently the loco-pilot or assistant loco-pilot has to observe the caution signals.

Cost:

  • It will cost only Rs 50 lakh per kilometer to operate it as compared to such projects across the world (about Rs 2 crore).

 Communications:

  • It will also include stationary devices to collect signaling inputs and relay them to a central system to enable seamless communication with train crew and stations.
