19 Nov 2021 Puri Heritage: Corridor Project
- The Odisha government will soon lay the foundation stone of the Puri Heritage Corridor, which will be built at a cost of Rs 800 crore.
- The project is a part of the Expansion of Infrastructure and Development of Heritage and Architecture (ABADHA) scheme to develop Puri as a world class heritage city.
Puri Heritage Corridor Project:
- Envisaged in the year 2016, the Puri Heritage Corridor project was unveiled in December 2019 to transform the holy city of Puri into an International Heritage Site.
- The project includes redevelopment of major parts of the holy city and surrounding Jagannath Temple for visitors and tourists.
- The project will include Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) building redevelopment, a 600 capacity Srimandir Welcome Centre, Jagannath Cultural Centre, Badadanda Heritage Streetscape, beach development, Puri Lake, Musa River revival plan etc.
Jagannath Temple:
- It is believed to have been built in the 12th century by Anantvarman Chodaganga, a king of the Eastern Ganga dynasty.
- Jagannath Puri Temple is called ‘Yamanika Tirtha’, according to Hindu beliefs, the power of the God of Death ‘Yama’ ended because of the presence of Lord Jagannath here.
- This temple was called “White Pagoda” and is one of the Char Tirth Dham (Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, Rameshwaram).
- The temple has four gates – the eastern ‘Singhdwara’ which is the main gate with two bowed lions, the southern ‘Ashwadwara’, the western ‘Tiger Gate’ and the northern ‘Hastidwara’. Each gate has a specific type of carving.
- Opposite the entrance is the Aruna Pillar or Surya Pillar, which was originally the Sun Temple at Konark.
- Festivals: The world famous RathYatra and BahudaYatra.
