- This law empowers the magistrate of any state or union territory in India to pass orders prohibiting the assembly of four or more people in a specified area.
- It is imposed in cases of nuisance or potential danger of any event which is likely to cause disturbance to human life or damage to property.
- This order can be passed against a particular person or the general public.
Features of Section 144 : The Hindu Analysis
- It prohibits the possession or carrying of any kind of weapon in the given jurisdiction.
- The maximum punishment for such an act is three years.
- According to the order passed under this section, there will be no movement of public and all educational institutions will remain closed.

Duration of Order of Section 144 : The Hindu Analysis
- No order under this section can be enforced for a period exceeding two months.
- At the discretion of the State Government, its validity can be extended for two more months with a maximum validity of six months.
- Section 144 can be withdrawn once the situation becomes normal.
Difference between Section 144 and Curfew : The Hindu Analysis
- Section 144 prohibits the assembly of four or more people in the area concerned, while during curfew people are instructed to stay indoors for a specific period. During curfew, the government also imposes a complete ban on traffic.
- Markets, schools, colleges and offices remain closed during curfew, while only essential services are allowed to open on prior notice.
