- This law empowers the magistrate of any state or union territory in India to pass orders prohibiting the assembly of four or more people in a specified area.
- It is imposed in cases of nuisance or potential danger of any event which is likely to cause disturbance to human life or damage to property.

- It prohibits the possession or carrying of any kind of weapon in the given jurisdiction.

- Section 144 prohibits the assembly of four or more people in the area concerned, while during curfew people are instructed to stay indoors for a specific period. During curfew, the government also imposes a complete ban on traffic.
- Markets, schools, colleges and offices remain closed during curfew, while only essential services are allowed to open on prior notice.
