Black Box- Today Current Affairs

  • The black box of the M17 helicopter of the Air Force, which crashed on December 9, was found. After this, now with the help of this device, the reason for the crash is likely to be found out soon.
  • Let us tell you that 13 people including CDS General Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika died in this tragic accident. There is a wave of mourning in the whole country on the untimely death of CDS.
  • In fact, in the year 1953-54, in view of the increasing number of aircraft accidents, the aircraft makers realized the need to install such a machine in the flight so that the true cause of the accidents could be detected and learning from these experiences, in the future such accidents can be avoided.
  • Thus, the black box was discovered. An interesting thing here is that the name of this instrument is black box whereas its original color is orange.
  • Since the color of the black box is like red, it was initially called ‘Red Egg’. But later on, it got renamed as Black Box.  There is no clear reason as to how it got its name black box, but it is speculated that perhaps the inner wall of the black box was kept black, hence it came to be called ‘black box’.
  • This machine works like a flight recorder. In which the moment-to-moment information of the aircraft is recorded.  That is, it is a machine that closely records all the activities that happen during the flight in any flight.
  • It is fitted in the rear of the plane. It has two main functions – first as a flight data recorder and second as a cockpit voice recorder.
  • As a flight data recorder, it records about 88 types of data including aircraft direction, altitude, fuel, and speed and cabin temperature. It is capable of holding more than 25 hours of recorded information.  Also, it can withstand a temperature of 11000 ° C for an hour.
  • In addition, the device inside this box can withstand temperatures of 260°C for up to 10 hours. The black box, fitted as a cockpit voice recorder, records up to 2 hours of in-flight sound.
  • That is, it records the conversation between the engine, emergency alarm, cabin and cockpit sounds, and flight controls. From these recorded data, it can be ascertained that what was the atmosphere of the aircraft before the accident.
  • The question arises that why this black box does not break even after falling from such a height?
  • Actually, this black-box is made of titanium metal which is considered a very strong metal. It is kept sealed in a box made of titanium itself.
  • Due to this, the black-box remains safe despite the most dangerous plane crashes. It has another feature that it can work without electricity for 30 days and when it breaks apart from the plane, it keeps on making a beep sound every second with a wave.
  • Since this wave continues for 30 days, with the help of this, the search team can easily find it within a radius of 2 to 3 km.
  • Not only this, this black box is capable of sending waves even from 15000 feet deep sea. A few years ago, an Indonesian plane crash also caused an air accident in which about 188 people lost their lives.  At that time, after this accident, the black box of that plane was recovered from the sea itself.
  • However, despite all this, the black box does not show a clear picture of any plane crash; in many cases it is not even available. But still it is certain that it has an important role in knowing the causes of the crash of an aircraft.
