BRICS Media Forum – Today Current Affairs
- Recently three months training program for journalists has been started by BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
- This program is an initiative of BRICS Media Forum.

BRICS Media Forum:
- In 2015, the forum was set up by media organizations from five countries, including The Hindu (India), Brazil’s CMA Group, Russia’s Sputnik, China’s Xinhua and South Africa’s Independent Media.
- The Forum aims to establish an efficient coordination mechanism among BRICS media, advance innovation-driven media development, and strongly accelerate the development of BRICS countries through exchanges and practical cooperation within the Mechanism.
History of BRICS : The Hindu Analysis
- BRICS was discussed in 2001 by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill in a report on the growth prospects for the economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China. In 2006, the four countries began a regular informal diplomatic coordination with annual meetings of foreign ministers at the end of the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly.
Formal arrangement : The Hindu Analysis
- The grouping was formalized during the first meeting of the BRIC Foreign Ministers in 2006.
- The first BRIC summit took place in 2009 in Yekaterinburg, Russia and discussed issues like reforms in the global financial system.
- In December 2010, South Africa was invited to join the BRIC and came to be known as BRICS.
- In March 2011, South Africa participated in the 3rd BRICS summit in Sanya, China for the first time.
Important Initiatives : The Hindu Analysis
- During the 6th BRICS Summit in Fortaleza, Brazil in 2014, BRICS leaders signed an agreement to establish a New Development Bank (Headquarters – Shanghai, China).
- The BRICS nations also agreed to create a BRICS Contingency Reserve Arrangement (CRA) during the Fortaleza Declaration at the 6th BRICS Summit in 2014.

- 42% of the world’s population.
- 30% of the land area.

- BRICS calls for reform of multilateral institutions to reflect structural changes in the world economy and the increasing central role of emerging markets.

Development cooperation:
- BRICS has developed a common perspective on many global and regional issues; including the establishment of the New Development Bank (NDB); a financial stability system in the form of a contingency reserve arrangement; and setting up a Vaccine R&D Virtual Center, etc.
