EOS-02 Satellite – Today Current Affairs
- Recently information has been shared by the Union Minister of Science and Technology that Earth Observation Satellite-02 will be launched in the second quarter of the year 2022.
- The launch was delayed due to the pandemic and the resulting lockdown.
- Earlier the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS)-04 and two smaller satellites (INSPIREsat-1 and INS-2TD) of the Indian Space Research Organization were successfully placed in the desired orbit by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C52 rocket.
Today Current Affairs
EOS-02 Satellite:
- EOS-02 is a Technology Demonstration Satellite for various new technologies including Agriculture, Forestry, Geology, Hydrology, Small Power Electronics, Reaction Wheels etc. and which is the payload for SSLV (Small Satellite Launch Vehicle)-1.
- SSLV is the smallest vehicle weighing only 110 tonnes. It will take only 72 hours to integrate, whereas a launch vehicle still takes 70 days.
- It aims to provide a market for launching small satellites into low-Earth orbits that have emerged in recent years to meet the needs of developing countries, universities and private corporations for small satellites.
Other satellites in the EOS series:
EOS-01 : The Hindu Analysis
- An ‘Earth Observation Satellite’ (EOS) for agriculture, forestry and disaster management support.
EOS-03 : The Hindu Analysis
- The first earth observation satellite in geostationary orbit, which includes instruments related to near real time imaging, rapid monitoring of natural disasters, agriculture, forestry etc.
EOS-04 : The Hindu Analysis
- Radar imaging satellite, which aims to provide high quality images in all weather conditions for applications such as agriculture, forestry and plantation, soil moisture and hydrology and flood mapping.
EOS-05 : The Hindu Analysis
- Earth observation satellite in geostationary orbit.
EOS-06 : The Hindu Analysis
- ‘Earth Observing Satellite’ for applications related to ocean related services, potential fisheries sector and forecasting of sea conditions.
