Good Governance Index- 2021- Today Current Affairs
- Recently, on the occasion of Good Governance Day (25 December), the Good Governance Index 2021 has been released by the government.
- This index has been prepared by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).
- India was ranked 49th in the Chandler Good Government Index (CGGI) earlier this year.
About Good Governance Index- 2021
- GGI is a comprehensive and implementable framework for assessing the state of governance in states and union territories which helps in determining the ranking of states/districts.
- The objective of GGI is to create a tool that can be used uniformly across states to assess the impact of various interventions by the Central and State Governments, including Union Territories.
- Based on the GGI framework, this index creates a comparative basis among states while developing a competitive spirit for improvement.
- As per GGI 2021, 20 states have improved their overall GGI score as compared to GGI 2019 index score.
- GGI is envisaged as a biennial exercise.
Ranking Basis: The Hindu Analysis
58 indicators and 10 sectors have been included in the framework of the Good Governance Index – 2021:
- Agriculture and Allied Sectors
- Commerce and Industry
- Human Resource Development
- public health
- Public Infrastructure and Utilities
- Economic governance
- Social Welfare and Development
- Judicial and Public Safety
- Environment
- Citizen Centric Governance
Ranking of States: The index classifies the states and union territories into four categories.
Other States- Group A:
- Gujarat has topped the overall ranking in the Good Governance Index- 2021 covering 10 sectors, followed by Maharashtra and Goa.
Other States- Group B:
- Madhya Pradesh tops the list, followed by Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
North-East and Hill States:
- Himachal Pradesh tops the list, followed by Mizoram and Uttarakhand.
Union Territory:
- Delhi tops the overall rank registering a growth of 14% on GGI 2019 indicators.
