Indian Navy Day- Today Current Affairs

  • ‘Indian Navy Day’ is celebrated every year on 4 December to mark the Indian Navy’s counter-attack in Operation Trident during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Introduction: The Hindu Analysis

  • The Indian Navy was established in the year 1612 by the East India Company.
  • This year, the Navy plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of India’s victory in the 1971 war with the theme of ‘Golden Victory Year’.

Operation Trident

  • It was a retaliatory attack by the Indian Navy on the port of Karachi during the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971.
  • India used anti-ship missiles for the first time during this operation and destroyed the Pakistani destroyer ‘PNS Khyber’.
  • Three warships of the Indian Navy – INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer played a key role in the attack.

  • It is headed by the President of India as the Supreme Commander.
  • The motto of the Indian Navy is- ‘Sham no Varunah’ which means ‘May Varuna, the god of water, be auspicious to us.’
  • Some of the early missions of the Indian Navy include its contribution in the year 1961 to liberate Goa from Portugal.
  • The Navy has developed into a commendable force with the construction of a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine- ‘INS Arihant’ and several other ships.
  • The Indian Navy currently has an aircraft carrier – INS Vikramaditya, which was commissioned in 2013 and was formerly a former Russian ship.
  • It operates three classes of submarines: Chakra (has the nuclear powered INS Chakra), Sindhughosh and Shishumar.
  • Indigenous aircraft carrier named INS Vikrant has recently (2021) started sea trials (one of the final stages of trials).
  • Marine Commandos or MARCOS are Special Forces units of the Indian Navy, trained to conduct warfare, counter-terrorism, special operations, hostage rescue and asymmetric warfare.
  • It was the first organization to respond to the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks.
