- Recently the fourth Scorpion submarine ‘INS Vela’ built under Project-75 has been delivered to the Indian Navy.
Scorpene class submarines:
- The Scorpene class submarines covered under ‘Project-75’ are powered by ‘Diesel-Electric Propulsion System’.
- The Scorpene is one of the most sophisticated submarines, capable of carrying out multiple missions including anti-surface ship warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area-specific surveillance.
- The ‘Scorpene’ class is the Navy’s first modern conventional submarine line-up in nearly two decades after ‘INS Sindhushastra’ was procured from Russia in July 2000.
Project-75:
- It is a program of the Indian Navy, which includes the construction of six Scorpene class ‘attack submarines’.
- The design of the Kalvari class submarines is based on the ‘French Scorpene class’ submarines.
- It is supported by the Department of Defense Production (Ministry of Defence) and the Indian Navy during various stages of construction.
- Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) is building six Scorpene submarines with technology support from French Naval Group under a US$3.75 billion deal signed in October 2005.
- The ‘Mazgaon Dock Limited’ shipyard is a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence.
Other submarines under Project-75:
- Two submarines- Kalvari and Khanderi have been inducted into the Indian Navy.
- The Scorpene Vagir is under trial.
- Sixth submarine- INS ‘Vagsheer’ is under construction.
