- Recently scientists have detected a Quasi-satellite named Kamo`oalewa.
- This quasi-satellite revolves around the Sun following the orbit of the Earth. It is possible that this could be a segment from the Moon.
- The word ‘kamo-oleva’ means a rotating piece of space. It is called a quasi-satellite because it orbits the Sun but is closer to Earth.
- This stone is in the shape of a ferry-wheel, that is, about 190 feet in diameter. Due to its small size, it was quite difficult for scientists to study about it.
- It passes close to Earth once a year and scientists can see it with the help of very powerful telescopes.
- In fact Kaomo-Olewa was discovered in the year 2006 through the PanSTARRS telescope in Hawaii. But not much was known about it at that time, so some concrete information about it was not made public.
- But in the last few years, scientists have done a lot of study about it and now a report has been published in a journal named Nature Communications Earth and Environment.
- The study found that Kamo-Oleva’s light spectrum resembles that of the Moon, as the stones brought from NASA’s Apollo mission have a similar light spectrum.
- Scientists believe that this stone has been circling near the earth for millions of years, but no one knew this.
- However, how and what caused it to separate from the Moon and how it began to revolve around the Sun, nothing can be said with certainty. This is still the subject of further research and study.
- It is planned to launch a mission in the year 2025 to collect samples of Kamo-Oleva. Scientists believe that its study can reveal the ancient relationship between the Earth and the Moon.
