What this agreement will do?
Over 1000 armed cadres have renounced violence and entered society as a result of this historic deal. The Union Government and the Assam Government would jointly provide a Special Development Package of Rs. 1000 crores over five years to fund particular initiatives for the development of Karbi regions.
The following are the key features of the Agreement:
- This Memorandum of Settlement will ensure greater autonomy for the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, as well as protection of Karbi people’s identity, language, culture, and other aspects of their culture, as well as focused development of the Council area, all without jeopardizing Assam’s territorial and administrative integrity.
- Armed groups in Karbi have agreed to stop using violence and join the peaceful democratic process mandated by the law of the state. The agreement also calls for the rehabilitation of armed group cadres.
- The Assam government will establish a Karbi Welfare Council to emphasize development efforts for Karbi people residing outside the KAAC area.
