  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project on Chenab River in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Kvar Hydroelectric Project : Today Current Affairs

  • It is part of the Indus basin and will be one of at least four upcoming projects in the district, including the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul Hydroelectric Project and the 624 MW Kiru Hydroelectric Project.
  • Under the old Indus Water Treaty of 1960 between India and Pakistan, the two countries share the waters of six rivers in the Indus basin that flow from India to Pakistan.
  • India has full rights over three of these eastern rivers – Sutlej, Beas and Ravi, while Pakistan has rights over the western rivers – Chenab, Jhelum and Indus. Today Current Affairs
  • The Kwar project will be implemented by Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Limited (CVPPL), a joint venture company between National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) Limited and Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC).
  • The project is expected to generate 1975.54 million units with 90% dependability.
  • As a result of the construction work of the project, about 2,500 people will get direct and indirect employment.

  • Source: It rises in the upper Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh state of Kelahul and Spitij.
  • Chenab River is formed by the confluence of two rivers Chandra and Bhaga at Tandi (8 km southwest of Keylong) of Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
  • The Bhaga River originates from the Surya Tal Lake, which is located a few kilometers west of the Bara-Lacha La pass in Himachal Pradesh. The Hindu Analysis
  • The Chandra River originates from the glaciers east of the same pass (near Chandra Tal).
  • Flow: It flows through the plains of Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Pakistan before joining the Indus River.
