Mahaparinirvana Day- Today Current Affairs

  • ‘Doctor Bhimrao Ambedkar’s death anniversary is celebrated every year on 6th December as ‘Mahaparinirvana Diwas’.
  • ‘Parinirvana’, which is considered a key tenet of Buddhism, is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘liberation’ or ‘salvation’ after death.
  • According to the Buddhist text Mahaparinibbana Sutta, the death of Lord Buddha at the age of 80 is considered to be the original Mahaparinirvana.
  • ‘Doctor. Bhimrao Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh (now Madhya Pradesh).
  • Ambedkar was a social reformer, jurist, economist, writer, polyglot and scholar of comparative religious philosophy.
  • He is known as the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’. He was the first law minister of independent India.
  • In the year 1920, he started a fortnightly (printed over a period of 15 days) newspaper ‘Mooknayak’ which laid the foundation of an assertive and organized Dalit politics.
  • Apart from this, in the year 1923, he founded ‘Bahishkrit Hitkarini Sabha’. In the year 1925, he was appointed by the Bombay Presidency Committee to work in the Simon Commission.
  • In March 1927, he led the ‘Mahad Satyagraha’.
  • He participated in all three Round Table Conferences. He converted to Buddhism in the year 1956.  He died on 6 December 1956.
