Missile Testing Provisions:
- Under the ‘Pre-flight test notification’ of the ‘Ballistic Missile Agreement’ signed in the year 2005, each country has been asked to conduct flight tests for surface-to-surface ballistic missiles launched from any land or sea. An advance notice has to be given.
- Prior to the test, that country should issue a Notice to Air Mission (NOTAM) or Navigational Alert (NAVAREA) to alert aviation pilots and sailors respectively.
- Also the test country must ensure that the launch site is not within 40 km and the planned area of influence is not within 75 km of the International Border (IB) or the Line of Control (LoC).
- The planned trajectory should not cross the International Border or the Line of Control and should maintain a distance of at least 40 km from the border.
- Must be notified by the test country at least three days prior to the start of the “five-day launch window, within which it can conduct any land or sea-launched surface-to-surface ballistic missiles” Intends to flight test the missile.
- Pre-notification to be conveyed “through the concerned foreign offices and High Commission”.
Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) : The Hindu Analysis
- NOTAMs mean information that contains information necessary for personnel related to the operation of a flight that is not sufficiently known in advance to be disseminated by other means.
World Wide Navigational Warning Service (WWNWS) : The Hindu Analysis
- The World Wide Navigational Warning Service (WWNWS) was established in the year 1977 to provide information about threats to the navigation of international shipping around the world.
- Navigational warnings provide early warning of critical events that could threaten navigation.
- Many navigational warnings are temporary in nature but others remain in force for several weeks to be succeeded by Notices to Mariners (NMs).
BrahMos Missile: The Hindu Analysis
- BrahMos is a joint venture between Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India and NPOM of Russia.
- Brahmos is named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers.
- It is a two-stage (solid propellant engine in the first stage and liquid ramjet in the second) missile.
- It is a multiplatform missile i.e. it can be launched with precision from land, air and sea and multi-capacity missile, which works in any weather day and night.
- It works on the principle of ‘fire and forget’ i.e. it does not require guidance after launch.
- BrahMos is one of the fastest cruise missiles, it currently operates with a speed of Mach 2.8, which is almost 3 times the speed of sound.
