National Milk day

National Milk day

  • The birthday of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the father of the White Revolution in India, is celebrated as ‘National Milk Day’.
  • The Indian Dairy Association (IDA) took the initiative to celebrate this day for the first time on 26 November in the year 2014.
  • It is worth noting that under the guidance of Dr. Verghese Kurien, many important institutions like Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited and National Dairy Development Board etc. were formed in India.
  • In the year 1970, ‘Operation Flood’ was started with a view to increase the milk production and increase the income of the rural area.
  • Uttar Pradesh is the country’s leading state in milk production, while ‘Amul’ based in Gujarat is the country’s largest milk cooperative.
  • This day is celebrated to highlight the fact that dairy is a major source of livelihood for one billion people.
  • India has become the largest producer of milk in the world in the last few years with more than 150 million tonnes of milk production. While India’s butter import in the year 1955 was 500 tonnes, by the year 1975 all types of import of milk and milk products became almost zero, because by this time India had become self-sufficient in milk production.
