Panex-21- Today Current Affairs
- Recently a curtain raiser event called PANEX-21 was organized for the member countries of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) countries.
- This exercise is planned to be conducted by the end of this year (2021).
Introduction:
- It is a humanitarian aid and disaster relief exercise.
- Subject experts and representatives from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand will participate.
- There will also be a static demonstration multi-agency exercise showcasing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HDR) equipment employed by the Indian Armed Forces and various civilian agencies.
Target:
- Promoting joint planning and building regional cooperation to deal with natural disasters.
- Natural disasters are sudden ecological disturbances or hazards that affect the adjustment capacity of the affected community and require external assistance.
- Natural disasters can be broadly classified into categories including geophysical, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions; hydrology such as floods; meteorology such as hurricanes; Meteorology such as heat and cold waves and droughts; and biological epidemics.
Importance of practice:
- The COVID-19 pandemic, along with other natural disasters, has provided new lessons, including changes in practices and procedures for disaster mitigation and disaster management.
- The exercise is being conducted keeping in mind these changes and post-pandemic challenges.
BIMSTEC- The Hindu Analysis
- It is a regional organization consisting of seven countries.
- Out of its 7 members, 5 members – Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka are from South Asia and two – Myanmar and Thailand are from South-East Asia.
- It provides a new platform for India to engage with its neighbor’s, as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has become insignificant due to differences between India and Pakistan.
- With a focus on inter-regional cooperation, BIMSTEC has also built a common forum with SAARC and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries.
