Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Gramin

 

  • Recently Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Gramin (PMAY-G) has completed 5 years on November 20, 2021.
  • Earlier it was reported that only 5.4% of the houses sanctioned under PMAY-G have been completed in the period 2020-2021 due to adverse impact of COVID-19.
  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Urban has been implemented under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Key points

 Launch:

  • The erstwhile rural housing scheme- Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) was restructured as PMAY-G with effect from 1st April, 2016 to achieve the objective of “Housing for All” by the year 2022.
  • Involved Ministries: Ministry of Rural Development.

Objective:

  • Providing a pucca house with basic amenities to all rural households who are homeless or living in kutcha or dilapidated houses by the end of March 2022.
  • To help the below poverty line (BPL) rural people in the form of full grant assistance in construction of housing unit and up-gradation of existing unused kutcha houses.

Beneficiary:

  • SC/ST people, free bonded labor and non-SC/ST categories, widows or kin of defense personnel killed in action, ex-servicemen and retired members of paramilitary forces, persons with disabilities and minorities.
  • Selection of Beneficiaries: Through three stages verification- Socio Economic Caste Census 2011, Gram Sabha, and Geo-tagging.
  • Cost sharing mechanism: The unit support cost is shared between the central and state governments in the ratio of 60:40 in the plains and 90:10 in the north-eastern and hilly states.

Features:

  • Minimum house size increased to 25 sq m (from 20 sq m) with clean cooking space.
  • Unit assistance increased from Rs.70,000 to Rs.1.20 lakh in plain states and from Rs.75,000 to Rs.1.30 lakh in hilly states.
  • Assistance for construction of toilets will be availed through convergence with Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin (SBM-G), MGNREGA or any other dedicated source of funding.
  • Efforts will also be made for convergence of various government facilities like piped drinking water, electricity connection, LPG gas connection.
