  • The period of 19th century is considered to be the period of religious-cultural and social renaissance in India.
  • It is worth noting that during this period, many intellectuals and great men came forward to make radical changes in religion and society and they also tried to remove the prevalent defects in Indian society.
  • The name of Savitribai Phule is taken with great respect among such great social reformers. Together with her husband, Jyotirao Phule, she gave a new direction to the Indian social reform movement.
  • Savitribai Phule was born on 3 January 1831 in Maharashtra. His father’s name was Khandoji Nevse and mother’s name was Lakshmibai. The Hindu Analysis.
  • At the age of only 12, she was married to Jyotirao Phule, who was a noted thinker, social activist, writer and philosopher.
  • The condition of Indian women during the nineteenth century was very pathetic. While on the one hand women were facing the brunt of male domination, on the other hand they were forced to bear various kinds of torture and atrocities due to the conservative thinking of the society.
  • In such difficult circumstances, Savitribai Phule tried hard to free women from social exploitation by becoming a social reformer and for their equal education and opportunities.
  • In the year 1848, the first girls’ school in the country was established by Savitribai Phule in Pune, Maharashtra. She along with her husband opened 18 schools for girls.
  • Savitribai did not only do the work of teaching in these schools, but she also used to constantly try for the girls not to leave the school. Significantly, Savitribai Phule is also credited for being the first teacher.
  • She founded an organization called Satyashodhak Samaj along with her husband to promote marriage without priests and discourage dowry system as well as get inter-caste marriages.

  • Savitribai Phule wrote 2 poetry books “Kavya Phule” and “Bavankashi Subodratnakar” as a poet to bring new awakening in the society.
  • After the plague broke out in Maharashtra, he, along with his son, opened a hospital in Pune in 1897 to treat plague victims. However, while serving the patients, she herself fell victim to the plague and on 10 March 1897 said goodbye to this world forever.
