- Recently the third edition of the trilateral naval exercise Singapore-India-Thailand Maritime Exercise (SITMEX) has been held in the Andaman Sea of the Indian Ocean.
Introduction:
- This exercise is in line with the objectives of India’s SAGAR– Security and Growth for All Policy in the Indian Ocean Region.
- The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue is Asia’s premier defense summit. It was launched in the year 2002.
- The first edition of SITMEX was conducted by the Indian Navy at Port Blair in September 2019.
- The second edition of the exercise was hosted by Singapore in November 2020. The year 2021 edition of this exercise is being hosted by Thailand.
- It includes several tactical training exercises, such as naval maneuvers and surface warfare exercises.
- It aims to strengthen mutual relations and develop common understanding and processes towards enhancing comprehensive maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.
- The exercise is conducted annually and was announced by India at the Shangri-La Dialogue in June 2018.
