Swachh Bharat Mission – Today Current Affairs

  • Recently the Prime Minister has inaugurated the ‘Gobar-Dhan’ (Bio-CNG) plant in Indore, its objective is to remove lakhs of tonnes of waste, which is occupying thousands of acres of land and causes air and water pollution. The reason is giving rise to many diseases.
  • It has been set up under the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-U 2.0).
  • This plant is based on ‘Zero Landfill Model’. Apart from this, the project is also expected to have many environmental benefits, such as reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, providing green energy with organic manure as fertilizer, etc.

Today Current Affairs

Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0:

  • SBM-U 2.0 announced in Budget 2021-22 is the second phase of SBM-U.
  • Government is trying to secure disposal of sewage and septage through toilets.
  • The first phase of SBM-U was launched on October 2, 2014 with the objective of making urban India Open Defecation Free (ODF) and ensuring 100% scientific management of municipal solid waste. This lasted till October 2019.
  • It will be implemented over five years from 2021 to 2026 with an outlay of Rs 1.41 lakh crore.
  • The mission is being implemented under the broad principles of ‘Waste to Wealth’ and ‘Circular Economy’.

Aim: The Hindu Analysis

  • It focuses on segregation of waste at source, reduction of single-use plastics and air pollution, effectively managing waste from construction and demolition activities and bioremediation of all dump sites.
  • Under this mission, all types of waste water will be treated properly before releasing it into water bodies and efforts are being made by the government to give priority to maximum reuse.

Mission Outcomes: The Hindu Analysis

  • All statutory cities will be ODF+ certified (focused on toilets with water, maintenance and sanitation).
  • All statutory cities with less than 1 lakh population will be ODF++ certified (focused on sludge and sludge management with toilets).
  • More than 50% of all statutory cities with a population of less than 1 lakh will be water certified.
  • As per MoHUA’s Garbage Free Cities Star Rating Protocol for Garbage Free Cities, all statutory cities will be assigned at least 3 Star Garbage Free Rating.
  • Bioremediation of all old dump sites will be done.
