- Recently the Kerala Tourism Department has started live streaming of an annual temple festival called ‘Theyyam’ performance to promote cultural tourism.

Theyyam:
- Theyyam is a popular ritual of dance worship in Kerala and Karnataka state.
- It contains thousands of years old traditions and customs.
- People consider Theyyam as a medium to connect themselves with God and thus they seek blessings from Theyyam.
- Each theyyam is a man or a woman, who has attained divine status by performing heroic deeds or leading a virtuous life.
- Most Theyyams are believed to be incarnations of Shiva or Shakti (Shiva’s wife) or have strong associations with these major deities of Hinduism.
- More than 400 Theyyam factors are present. Some of these are very important.
Major Types of Theyyam: The Hindu Analysis
Vishnumurti:
- There are only two Vaishnava Theyyams – Daivatara and Vishnumurti.
- These Theyyams are considered to be incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
- It tells the story of Theyyam Palanthai Kannan, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu.
Gullikan:
- Gulikan is believed to be an incarnation of Yama, the Hindu god of death and justice.
- According to Indian mythology, Gulikan was one of the most important warriors of Lord Shiva.
Kuttichathan:
- It is Theyyam of Brahmin caste.
- Kuttichathan Theyyam is believed to have originated in Vishnu Maya for Lord Shiva.
