VL-SRSAM: DRDO- Today Current Affairs

  • After February this year, the Vertical Launched Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) was successfully flight-tested by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for the second time in a row.
  • It was launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur.


  • It is a rapid reaction surface-to-air missile indigenously designed and developed by DRDO for the Indian Navy, aimed at neutralizing various airborne threats at close range including sea-skimming targets.
  • This missile has a range of 50 to KM. It has an operational range of distance and the terminal stage features midcourse inertial guidance through a fiber optic gyroscope and active radar homing.
  • The system was launched to validate the integrated operation of all weapon system components including the vertical launcher unit with the controller, canistered flight vehicle, weapon control system, etc., required for future launches.
  • Successful testing of these systems is crucial for future missile launches from Indian Navy ships.
  • It will further boost the defense capability of Indian Navy ships against air threats. It has also paved the way for integration of weapon systems on Indian naval ships.


  • Major units of ‘Defence Research and Development Organization’ such as ‘Defence Research and Development Laboratory’ (DRDL) and Research Center Building (RCI) and Research and Development Establishment etc. have contributed to the development of the system.
