  • Recently a very rare pink hand fish, which is a rare walking fish, has been seen off the coast of Tasmania in Australia.
  • It has been seen off the coast of Australia after 22 years. It was being monitored for 22 years and efforts were also being made for its conservation, as a result of which this success has been achieved.
  • The specialty of this pink hand fish is that it has two protruding fins on both sides of its body which look like small hands and with the help of these hand-like organs, this fish moves. Hence its name is Walking fish.  It has been seen as a walking fish during a survey at Tasman Fracture Marine Park.
  • The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, which is Australia’s national science agency, has confirmed that a rare walking fish has been seen again after 22 years.
  • It was last seen in Australia in 1999. According to CSIRO, there was a time when walking fish were found in large numbers in the coastal waters of North East Tasmania and South Tasmania.  In the year 2012, this species was declared critically endangered in Australia. The Hindu Analysis.
  • Later it was only seen in the Derwent and D’Entrecasteaux estuaries. The Pink Hand is the only native species of Australia.
  • Recent research has also confirmed that handfish, hitherto considered shallow water species, can be found in deep ocean areas (up to 150 m deep ocean area) and more open waters. The Hindu Analysis.
  • The pink handfish is a member of the anglerfish family. It is one of 14 types of handfish found off the southwest coast of Tasmania.
  • Recently, Canadian researchers have also discovered the extinct swordfish, which was found 130 million years ago in the ocean waters of Modern Day Colombia.
