Russia-Ukraine conflict may give India an opportunity to export more wheat to global markets.

More than one-fourth of the world’s wheat is exported by Russia and Ukraine.
Russia is the world’s largest exporter of wheat, accounting for over 18% of international exports.
Russia and Ukraine exported more than one-fourth (25.4%) of the world’s wheat in the year 2019.
Russia > United States > Canada > France > Ukraine are among the top five countries that export the highest dollar value of wheat.
Egypt is the largest importer of wheat in the world.
Turkey procures maximum wheat from Russia and Ukraine, 74% of Turkey’s imports in the year 2019 were from these two countries.
India is the second largest producer of wheat with a share of about 13.5 percent of the world’s total wheat production.
India produces about 107.59 metric tonnes of wheat annually, while a major portion of it is used for domestic consumption.
India’s contribution to world wheat exports is less than 1%. However, its share was 0.14% in the year 2016, which has increased to 0.54% in the year 2020.
India’s central pool currently stands at 24.2 million tonnes, which is more than twice the buffer and strategic requirements.

It is the second most important food grain crop in India after rice.
It is the main food grain crop of the north and north-western part of the country.
Wheat is a Rabi crop which requires cool weather and strong sunlight during ripening.
The success of the Green Revolution contributed to the development of Rabi crops especially wheat.
