- ‘World Heritage Week’ is celebrated every year from 19 November to 25 November by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
- Its purpose is to make common people aware of the rich cultural heritage and make efforts for its conservation.
- In India this ceremony is organized by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
- The Archaeological Survey of India is a premier organization for archaeological research and conservation of the nation’s cultural heritage, which mainly maintains ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains.
- On the occasion of World Heritage Week, the Archaeological Survey of India and many other museums have organized programs highlighting the importance of ancient monuments and their conservation.
- The Archaeological Survey of India works under the Ministry of Culture.
- Presently there are 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India which include 32 Cultural Sites, 7 Natural Sites and 1 Mixed Site.
- Recently the UNESCO World Heritage Committee during its 44th session included ‘Kakatiya Rudreshwar (Rampa) Temple’ in Warangal in Telangana and ‘Dhaulavira’, a Harappan-era city in Gujarat, in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
- At present, 3,691 monuments in the country have been protected by the Department of Archeology. The maximum 745 protected sites are located in Uttar Pradesh.
