  • World Minority Rights Day is celebrated every year on 18 December to create awareness about the right to freedom and equality for ethnic minorities all over the world including India and to create awareness about respect for minorities.
  • The day focuses on the challenges and issues faced by minority communities of different ethnic origins.
  • In the year 1992, 18 December was declared as ‘World Minority Rights Day’ by the United Nations. The United Nations adopted the Statement on the Rights of Persons Belonging to Religious or Linguistic National or Ethnic Minorities on 18 December 1992.
  • In India, this day is organized by the ‘National Commission for Minorities’ (NCM). The ‘National Commission for Minorities’ was established in the year 1992 by the Central Government under the National Commission for Minorities Act.
  • The word “minority” has not been defined in the Indian Constitution. However, the constitution recognizes religious and linguistic minorities.
  • The word ‘minority’ has been used in Articles 29, 30, 350A and 350B of the Indian Constitution but its definition has not been given anywhere.
