World soil day- Today Current Affairs

  • Recently Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)- Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI) celebrated ‘World Soil Day’ (WSD) on 5th December 2021.

Key points

  • It was recommended by the ‘International Union of Soil Sciences’ (IUSS) in the year 2002. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has supported the formal establishment of the WSD led by Thailand as a global awareness-raising global soil partnership platform. 
  • Was designated as the first official WSD by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 5 December 2014.
  • December 5 was chosen because it is the official birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. Who officially approved this event.

The FAO presents two awards on the occasion of WSD:

  • Raja Bhumibol World Soil Day Award: An annual award that honors individuals, communities, organizations and countries that have organized remarkable and engaging World Soil Day activities or campaigns in the past year.
  • Glinka World Soil Award: This award is given by FAO. It is an annual award given to individuals dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing environmental issues.  It is awarded to individuals and organizations who, through their leadership and activities, are contributing to the promotion of soil management and the conservation of soil resources.
